Retire in Jávea (Xàbia) — Coves, Climate and a Big British Community
Three distinct districts — old town, port and Arenal beach — wrapped around some of the Mediterranean's prettiest coves, with what the WHO once called the world's healthiest microclimate. Jávea is the most British of the northern Costa Blanca retirement towns.

Why Jávea attracts retirees
Jávea sits inside a horseshoe of mountains (Montgó, Granadella, Cap de la Nao) that shelter it from wind in every direction. The microclimate is unusually stable — 320+ days of sun, almost no extremes — which has drawn northern European retirees since the 1960s.
The town has three centres. The medieval Pueblo (old town) is the cultural heart with its Gothic church and Tuesday market. The Port has the working fishing fleet, marina and a row of seafood restaurants. The Arenal is the long sandy beach with bars, watersports and the densest concentration of international restaurants.
British, Dutch and Belgian retirees who want sun, sea and a soft-landing community where English works everywhere.
Healthcare
Public: Hospital de Dénia (15 min by car) handles most acute care. The Centro de Salud in Jávea handles GP, paediatrics and minor emergencies.
Private: Vithas Medimar in the Arenal is the closest full-service private hospital. For complex specialties most retirees go to HLA Vistahermosa or Quirónsalud in Alicante (1 h).
English-speaking GPs, dentists, opticians and physios are abundant in all three districts.

Where retirees live
- ✦**Old town:** townhouses and apartments, walkable to market and cafés. The cultural choice.
- ✦**Port:** apartments and small villas, the marina lifestyle.
- ✦**Arenal:** the most international, flat, perfect for couples without a car.
- ✦**La Granadella / Cabo La Nao:** premium villa zones with sea views, car essential.
- ✦**Tossal Gros / Montgó slopes:** quieter villa zones, walking distance to the Arenal.
Social life and clubs
Jávea's retirement social calendar is exceptionally full. U3A Jávea runs 60+ groups, the British Society organises lunches and trips, the Dutch Club hosts monthly dinners, and three different walking groups meet weekly. The Costa Blanca Bridge Club has its biggest chapter here, and the Real Club Náutico is open to non-Spanish members.
For sport: golf at Jávea Club, sailing from the port, padel at multiple clubs, hiking in the Montgó natural park. The annual Fogueres de Sant Joan (June 23) and Moros i Cristians (last week of July) are the social highlights of the year.
Trade-offs
Jávea is expensive — among the priciest non-luxury Costa Blanca towns for both rentals and property. Distance to Alicante airport (1 h 15) is the same as Dénia. The international density can feel insulating: it's easy to live in Jávea for years without ever needing Spanish, which is good for soft landings but can stunt integration.
