History & heritage
Founded in 1786 as a small inland farming village dependent on Polop. Its position on the slope between the sea and the Sierra de Bernia made it ideal for citrus, almond and olive cultivation. From the 1960s the township boomed as Northern Europeans — Norwegians in particular — chose it for permanent residence.
Lifestyle
A genuine Valencian village atmosphere in the old centre coexists with a cosmopolitan international scene. Mornings at the local market, afternoons on hillside villa terraces, evenings of cultural events at the Casa de Cultura. The annual Festival de Cinema brings independent films and red-carpet glamour each summer.
