Retire in Calpe — Sandy Beaches, Iconic Rock & Real Value

Calpe is the Costa Blanca's beach-town sweet spot for retirees: two long sandy beaches either side of the dramatic Peñón de Ifach, a walkable centre with daily Spanish life, and property prices noticeably below Moraira or Jávea. It's also one of the most international towns on the coast.

Why retirees choose Calpe

Calpe gives you a proper sandy beach lifestyle without paying Moraira prices. The town stays alive year-round — fish market, weekly market, restaurants and shops open through winter — because the resident population is genuinely mixed (Spanish, British, Dutch, German, Russian, Belgian, Scandinavian).

The Peñón de Ifach is more than a postcard: walking the natural park, the salt flats and the seafront promenades fills the weekly exercise quota without going anywhere. The marina and fishing port keep the centre lively.

Where to live

  • Playa de la Fossa (Levante): the long sandy beach, apartments with lifts, walk to the marina.
  • Playa Arenal-Bol: the other long beach, closer to the old town and fish market.
  • Old town: traditional centre, weekly market, lower prices, less sea-view.
  • Maryvilla / Empedrola: hillside villas with views of the Peñón — needs a car.
  • La Manzanera: famous Bofill apartments and quieter villas south of the Peñón.

Healthcare

Calpe has a well-run public health centre and a hospital de día. For full hospital care, Hospital Marina Baixa (Villajoyosa, public) is 30 minutes and Hospital IMED Levante (Benidorm) is 25 minutes by car. Several private clinics with English-speaking GPs operate in town.

Lifestyle & community

  • Two long sandy beaches — rare on this stretch of coast.
  • Walking, hiking the Peñón, kayaking, snorkelling all from the town.
  • Active sailing club, golf at Ifach (9 holes) and Don Cayo (Altea) nearby.
  • British, Dutch, German and Russian social clubs.
  • Weekly Saturday market, daily fish auction at the lonja.

Trade-offs

Honest pros and cons

Calpe is busier than Moraira in summer and lacks the postcard charm of Altea. Some of the older high-rises along the beach are dated. But for sandy-beach living at fair prices with year-round services, it's the strongest option on the northern Costa Blanca.
