How we ranked them
We scored 14 Costa Blanca towns across the things that actually matter once you move here full-time: healthcare access (public hospital within 20 minutes plus private clinics), walkability, weather and microclimate, cost of living, size and warmth of the international community, transport links to Alicante airport, property availability and resale, and the breadth of clubs, sport and culture that fill a retired week.
No single town wins on every metric. The right answer depends on whether you want a city, a beach village, a golf community or a hill town — and how much you want to use English on a daily basis.

Albir & Alfaz del Pi — the Nordic favourite
If you want the easiest soft landing, Albir is hard to beat. A 1 km pedestrianised promenade lined with restaurants in every northern-European language, a flat beach walk to the lighthouse, the Clínica Benidorm and HCB private hospitals minutes away, and the largest Norwegian school in mainland Europe.
Norwegians, Swedes, Dutch and Belgians dominate the demographic; you can spend a week without using a word of Spanish. The trade-off is that Albir feels — and prices — like a small northern European town transplanted to the Mediterranean.
Couples who want walkable daily life, a strong Nordic / Dutch community and excellent private healthcare on the doorstep.
Dénia & Jávea — gastronomy and coves
The northern Costa Blanca trades flat beaches for pine cliffs, turquoise coves and a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy (Dénia). Both towns have substantial British and Dutch communities, a buzzing year-round social calendar and the area's most reliable microclimate — the Montgó massif shields them from the worst of any winter wind.
Healthcare is good rather than great: the Dénia public hospital is well regarded; for complex private care most retirees drive 45 minutes to Benidorm or Alicante.
Orihuela Costa & the golf south
South of Torrevieja the coast flattens into a string of urbanisations built around championship golf — Villamartín, Las Ramblas, Las Colinas, Campoamor. Property is cheaper, the sun is more reliable in winter, and English is the lingua franca of the gated communities. The trade-off: you will need a car for everything, and the year-round Spanish population is smaller.
Healthcare proximity — a critical factor
| Town | Nearest public hospital | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Albir / Alfaz | Hospital Marina Baixa, La Vila Joiosa | 10 min |
| Dénia | Hospital de Dénia | in town |
| Jávea | Hospital de Dénia | 15 min |
| Calpe / Moraira | Hospital Marina Baixa | 25–30 min |
| Benidorm | Hospital Marina Baixa | 10 min |
| Alicante | Hospital General + Doctor Balmis | in town |
| Torrevieja | Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja | in town |
| Orihuela Costa | Hospital de Torrevieja | 15 min |
