Costa Blanca Culture — Festivals, Museums & Heritage

Three thousand years of Iberian, Phoenician, Roman, Moorish and Christian layers stack up along this coast. The Costa Blanca has two UNESCO sites (the Elche palm groves and the Misteri d'Elx), Spain's most spectacular re-enactment festivals (Moros y Cristianos), a dozen excellent museums and some of the best-preserved historic towns in Valencia and the Marina. Here is the complete cultural overview.

The four pillars of Costa Blanca culture

The province's cultural calendar and built heritage hang on four themes: the great fiestas (Las Hogueras, Moros y Cristianos, Fallas, Holy Week), the historic towns of the Vinalopó and Marina, the Iberian–Roman–Moorish archaeology beneath the modern coast, and the museums of Alicante, Elche, Villena and Dénia. Most visitors only see the beaches; a single inland day reveals the rest.

Two UNESCO listings in one city

Elche holds both a UNESCO World Heritage site (the Palmeral) and a UNESCO Intangible Heritage listing (the Misteri d'Elx mystery play, performed August 14–15) — unique in Spain.

The cultural triangle: three towns, one day

All three are within 45 minutes of Alicante and can be linked into a single inland day by car. Alternatively, the Renfe Cercanías commuter train serves Elche and Orihuela directly.

  • Elche — UNESCO palm groves, basilica, MAHE museum, the Mystery Play home.
  • Villena — 9th-century castle, the gold 'Tesoro de Villena' (one of Europe's most important Bronze Age finds).
  • Orihuela — Gothic cathedral, episcopal palace, baroque Holy Week processions; birthplace of poet Miguel Hernández.
