How long do I need in Elche?

Half a day (3–4 hours) covers the Huerto del Cura, the Parque Municipal, the basilica and lunch. Add the MAHE and L'Alcúdia for a full day.

Can I see the Mystery Play of Elche?

Yes — the Misteri d'Elx is performed annually on August 14 and 15 in the Basílica de Santa María. It is UNESCO Intangible Heritage. Free, but seats are reserved months in advance; many visitors watch on screens in the plaza outside.

Is Elche worth visiting in summer?

Yes — the palm groves provide deep shade and the temperature is several degrees cooler than the open coast. Best visited in the morning before 13:00.

Can I reach Elche by public transport?

Yes — Renfe Cercanías C-1 line connects Alicante to Elche-Carrús in 25 minutes, every 30 min. From Murcia, the same line runs north.

What else is near Elche?

The salt-lake flamingos of Santa Pola (15 min), the beach of Arenales del Sol (15 min), the modernista façades of Novelda (25 min inland), and the historic centre of Orihuela (35 min south).

Elche Palm Groves — Europe's Largest Palm Forest

Planted by the Phoenicians and expanded by the Moors, El Palmeral de Elche contains over 200,000 date palms — the largest such grove in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Combine it with Elche's beautiful basilica, the MAHE archaeology museum, and a lunch of arroz con costra for a perfect, easy day out.

Elche dates are harvested November–January. Buy fresh dates and date-syrup honey at the Mercado Central — a unique souvenir.

Getting there & lunch

From Alicante: 25 minutes by car on the A-7 or 25 minutes by Cercanías commuter train (every 30 min). From Torrevieja: 40 minutes by car. Free street parking outside the centre; paid lots near the basilica.

Eat arroz con costra (rice baked with an egg crust — an Elche speciality) at Mesón El Granaíno or Datil de Oro. Both are local institutions.
