
Elche Palm Groves — Europe's Largest Palm Forest
Planted by the Phoenicians and expanded by the Moors, El Palmeral de Elche contains over 200,000 date palms — the largest such grove in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. What to see
- ✦Huerto del Cura — the most beautiful private grove, home to the legendary 8-trunked Imperial Palm (€7 entry).
- ✦Parque Municipal — free public grove crossed by canals and footpaths, in the centre of town.
- ✦Basílica de Santa María — baroque dome where the UNESCO-listed Mystery Play of Elche is performed each August.
- ✦MAHE (Museo Arqueológico y de Historia) — home of the famous Dama de Elche replica (original is in Madrid).
- ✦L'Alcúdia archaeological site — Iberian and Roman remains, 2 km south, where the Dama was unearthed in 1897.

Elche dates are harvested November–January. Buy fresh dates and date-syrup honey at the Mercado Central — a unique souvenir.
Getting there & lunch
From Alicante: 25 minutes by car on the A-7 or 25 minutes by Cercanías commuter train (every 30 min). From Torrevieja: 40 minutes by car. Free street parking outside the centre; paid lots near the basilica.
Eat arroz con costra (rice baked with an egg crust — an Elche speciality) at Mesón El Granaíno or Datil de Oro. Both are local institutions.
