The Costa Blanca coastline at a glance

The Costa Blanca runs roughly 244 km from Dénia in the north to Pilar de la Horadada in the south, covering the entire coast of the province of Alicante. It splits naturally into two very different halves. The Costa Blanca Norte (Dénia to Altea) is dramatic and green — pine-clad cliffs, the Montgó massif and the Peñón de Ifach plunge straight into the sea, creating dozens of small coves and crystal-clear water. The Costa Blanca Sur (south of Alicante city) flattens out into long open beaches, salt lagoons and dunes — wider sand, warmer shallows, more space.

The water is famously clean: the province routinely earns one of the highest Blue Flag counts in Spain, with around 85–90 flags awarded most years. The sea is swimmable from late May to mid-October, peaking around 26°C in August. Even in winter, sheltered south-facing bays are pleasant for a walk and a coffee on a chiringuito terrace.

Hidden coves and secret calas

Some of the Costa Blanca's most magical beaches are not on any map of family resorts. They are small, often pebbly, reached by a winding road down through pine trees or by a 10-minute walk from a parking layby — and they are worth every step.

  • Cala Granadella (Jávea) — pebble cove, snorkelling, kayak rentals
  • Cala Moraig (Benitachell) — turquoise water beneath dramatic cliffs
  • Cala Llebeig (Benitachell) — boat or 45-min walk only; nothing but rock and sea
  • Cala del Portitxol (Jávea) — round white pebbles, blue water, postcard backdrop
  • Cala Baladrar (Benissa) — pine-shaded pebbles with a legendary chiringuito
  • Cala del Racó del Conill (Villajoyosa) — secluded, often empty mid-week
Go early or go late

Small coves fill fast in July and August. Aim to arrive before 10:00 or after 17:00 — you'll find parking, shade and a far better swim.

Family-friendly beaches (shallow & safe)

If you're travelling with small children, the long sandy beaches of the central and southern Costa Blanca are unbeatable: shallow shelves, gentle waves, lifeguards in season, showers, playgrounds and a chiringuito or ice-cream within a few steps.

  • Playa San Juan (Alicante) — 7 km of soft sand, every facility
  • Playa de Levante (Benidorm) — promenade, shallow shelf, full accessibility
  • Playa de la Fossa (Calpe) — wide sand under the Peñón, family classic
  • Playa del Arenal (Jávea) — the only big sandy beach in Jávea, very shallow
  • Playa Muchavista (El Campello) — 3 km of calm sand, less crowded than Alicante
  • Playa de los Náufragos (Torrevieja) — shallow, central, easy parking

Dog-friendly beaches (playas caninas)

Spanish coastal town halls designate specific beaches as 'playas caninas' where dogs are welcome (usually year-round, sometimes only out of high season). Rules vary slightly by town but the basics are universal: dog on lead outside the water, pick up after them, vaccinations up to date.

Blue Flag, water quality and accessibility

The Blue Flag is awarded annually by the Foundation for Environmental Education to beaches meeting strict standards on water quality, safety, environmental management and accessibility. The Costa Blanca consistently ranks among the top European destinations: 88 Blue Flags across the province in 2025.

Many of the larger town beaches — San Juan, Levante, Poniente, La Fossa, Arenal — are fully accessible, with amphibious wheelchairs, boardwalks across the sand and trained lifeguards offering assisted bathing in summer.

Check before you swim

Real-time water quality and lifeguard status for every beach in the Valencia Region is published on the regional government's Guía de Playas — search 'GVA guia de platges'.

Snorkelling, sunsets and chiringuitos

The clearest snorkelling on the Costa Blanca is around the protected marine reserves of Cabo de San Antonio (between Dénia and Jávea) and Isla de Tabarca off Santa Pola — both are easy day trips with a mask and fins. For sunset, the west-facing bays of the northern coast (Altea, Albir, Poniente in Benidorm) glow gold every evening from a clifftop bar.

Chiringuitos — the rustic-to-designer beach bars planted right on the sand — are central to the Costa Blanca summer ritual. Some are casual: paper plates, paella, a beer. Others (Bali Beach in Albir, Beach Garden in Villajoyosa, Olas in Moraira) are full-on Ibiza-style beach clubs with day beds and DJs.
