Why sail here

The Alicante coast offers nearly 250 km of cruising ground with eight major marinas, dozens of sheltered anchorages, and the Balearic Islands within easy overnight passage. Summer brings the classic Mediterranean pattern: glassy mornings, a south-east thermal breeze (the 'embat') filling in from 11:00 and peaking 15–20 knots in the afternoon, then dying at sunset. It's the perfect rhythm for a relaxed cruising holiday.

Alicante also hosts the start of The Ocean Race (formerly Volvo) every few years — proof that conditions are competitive enough for global-circuit racing while remaining gentle enough for beginners.

The classic one-week route

  • Day 1: Dénia → Cala Portitxol (Jávea) — short shakedown sail, anchor for the night
  • Day 2: Portitxol → Cala Granadella → Moraira marina (45 nm)
  • Day 3: Moraira → Calpe (anchor at Cala Mascarat under the Peñón)
  • Day 4: Calpe → Altea marina via Albir cliffs
  • Day 5: Altea → Tabarca Island anchorage (60 nm — longest day)
  • Day 6: Tabarca → Alicante or back up the coast
  • Day 7: Return to base — short hops with morning departures
Going further — Ibiza & Formentera

From Dénia, the crossing to Ibiza is roughly 60 nautical miles (an overnight or long day sail). A 10-day charter easily covers Dénia → Ibiza → Formentera → Dénia with time for the best beaches and anchorages.

Learning to sail

The Real Club Náutico de Dénia, RCN Calpe, RCR Alicante and several private schools run Spanish Federación and RYA-approved courses. A complete beginner can earn the Spanish 'Patrón de Navegación Básica' (PNB — boats up to 8 m, 12 nm offshore) over a week including theory and practical, for roughly €450–€650. RYA Competent Crew and Day Skipper courses are widely available in English, typically as 5-day live-aboard programmes for €750–€1,100.
