Guadalest — Spain's Most Visited Village

Perched on a knife-edge crag 595 m above the Marina Baixa, El Castell de Guadalest receives over two million visitors a year — second only to the Alhambra in southern Spain. The 11th-century Moorish fortress, the white-washed houses tucked behind a tunnel-gateway, and the impossibly turquoise reservoir below make it the single best half-day inland from Benidorm.

What to see in the village

  • Castillo de San José — Moorish ruins on the highest crag; 360° views across the Aitana range and out to the sea.
  • Casa Orduña — 17th-century noble house, now museum of the village's history.
  • Campanario — the iconic blue-domed belfry that appears on every postcard.
  • Mazmorra — the medieval dungeon carved into the rock under the village.
  • Eight quirky museums in a 200 m radius: micro-miniatures, antique vehicles, dolls' houses, salt & pepper shakers, instruments of torture, nativity scenes — odd, charming, and very Spanish.

Beat the coach crowds

Coach tours from Benidorm arrive 11:30–13:30. Arrive before 10:30 or after 15:30 for a near-empty village.

Getting there & combining

From Benidorm, take the CV-70 inland — 22 km, 40–45 minutes through dramatic mountain scenery. Paid car park at the village base (€2–€4); the village itself is pedestrian-only and reached via a natural rock tunnel.

Combine with Algar Waterfalls (30 min south), the Fuentes del Algar restaurants for lunch, or push deeper into the Vall de Guadalest to Confrides and the start of the Aitana hiking trails.
