ETF Investing from Spain

UCITS ETFs are the most tax- and cost-efficient long-term vehicle for Spanish residents. Accumulating share classes defer tax until sale; distributing classes pay quarterly dividends taxed at 19–28%. Spain's special 'traspaso' fund-switch benefit applies to mutual funds but NOT to ETFs — a critical distinction.

ETF vs mutual fund: the traspaso question

Spanish-resident investors in Spanish-domiciled mutual funds can switch between funds (traspaso) without triggering a taxable event. This is a unique Spanish benefit unavailable on ETFs.

Practical takeaway: if you rebalance frequently or want optionality to switch managers, a portfolio of indexed mutual funds (MyInvestor, Indexa, ING Naranja) can be more tax-efficient than ETFs despite higher TER (0.30–0.50% vs 0.10–0.25%).

ETFs win on cost, market depth, intraday liquidity, and global product range. For buy-and-hold investors with 10+ year horizons, the cost advantage typically beats the traspaso option.

PRIIPs barrier

EU PRIIPs regulation blocks Spanish retail investors from US-domiciled ETFs (VTI, VOO, QQQ). UCITS equivalents (VWCE, IWDA, EQQQ) deliver near-identical exposure and meet Spanish reporting requirements out of the box.
