Financial Investing from Spain

Spanish residents can build globally diversified portfolios with UCITS ETFs, dividend stocks, sovereign and corporate bonds, and tax-wrapped pensions. The catch is the Modelo 720/721/D6 reporting layer and Spain's 19–28% savings-income scale. This guide covers the broker, asset, and tax decisions that actually move after-tax returns.

Brokers Spanish residents actually use

  • Interactive Brokers Ireland — institutional-grade access, full UCITS + US ETFs (via PRIIPs workaround for pros), low FX spreads. Generates a Spanish-friendly report but you still file manually.
  • MyInvestor — Spanish robo + broker, automatic Modelo 100 prefill, indexed funds at 0.30% TER, no custody fees.
  • Indexa Capital / Finizens — managed indexed portfolios, 0.40–0.65% all-in, auto-rebalancing, ideal for hands-off investors.
  • Renta 4 / Bankinter Broker — Spanish brokers with full Modelo 720/D6 reporting and Letras del Tesoro access.
  • Avoid Trading 212 / eToro / Revolut Invest for serious capital — limited tax reports, custodial structures that complicate Modelo 720.

Reporting obligations

Modelo 720 (overseas assets >€50k per category) and Modelo D6 (overseas brokerage securities) are annual and carry punitive fines for omissions. Modelo 721 covers crypto. Reporting is separate from taxation — you still report even if no tax is owed.

Portfolio shapes that work

  • Three-fund core: 70% global equity ETF (IWDA/VWCE) + 20% EU aggregate bond ETF + 10% cash / Letras. Costs <0.20% TER.
  • Dividend tilt: 50% global equity + 30% high-dividend ETF (VHYL) + 20% bonds — for income-oriented retirees.
  • Beckham Law holders: shift to non-Spanish-source assets to legally minimise Spanish savings-tax exposure during the 6-year window.
