Welcome to San Juan de Alicante

Sant Joan d'Alacant (San Juan de Alicante) is an affluent inland town just 7 km north of Alicante city, separated from its famous namesake beach (Playa de San Juan, which actually belongs to Alicante municipality) by a wide huerta of citrus and almond groves. Long favoured by Alicante's professional classes for its grand 19th-century country houses (fincas), tree-lined avenues and the Hospital Universitario de Sant Joan, it offers a quieter, greener alternative to coastal living while keeping the city 15 minutes away.

Who it's ideal for

  • Medical professionals working at the university hospital
  • Families wanting a calm, green alternative to coastal towns
  • Buyers seeking historic fincas or large detached homes
  • Long-term residents prioritising schools and healthcare

History & heritage

Originally a scattering of fortified farmhouses in Alicante's huerta, San Juan grew in the 18th and 19th centuries as Alicante's bourgeoisie built summer fincas here. The opening of the university medical faculty and teaching hospital in the 1980s transformed it into a service hub.

Lifestyle

Family-oriented residential living with low-rise architecture, plenty of green space and an unusually high concentration of doctors, professors and lawyers. Saturday mornings revolve around the market, equestrian club and brunches in the historic centre.

Best beaches

Playa de San Juan

7 km of fine golden sand 5 minutes east — one of Spain's best urban beaches (technically in Alicante municipality).

Playa Muchavista

Continuation of San Juan beach into El Campello, 10 minutes north.
