You can't buy property, open a bank account or pay taxes in Spain without an NIE. Here's how to get yours quickly.
What is an NIE?
Número de Identificación de Extranjero — your tax ID as a foreigner in Spain. Essential for property, banking, utilities, mobile contracts and more.
How to apply
Three routes: (1) at a Spanish consulate in your home country, (2) at a Spanish police station with a pre-booked appointment, (3) via Power of Attorney with your lawyer.
How long it takes
Consulate: 2–6 weeks. In Spain: 1–4 weeks depending on appointment availability. Via lawyer with POA: ~2 weeks.
