Schools & Education in Spain

A complete guide to schools in Spain for expat families — public, private and international schools, IB, British, American, Dutch and German systems, fees and admissions on the Costa Blanca.

Spain has one of the highest densities of international schools in Europe — especially on the Costa Blanca. Families can choose between free public schools (in Spanish/Valencian), Spanish private (concertado), or full international schools.

Public schools

Free, taught in Spanish and Valencian (regional language). Excellent for young children who pick up languages naturally; harder for teenagers arriving with no Spanish.

Concertado (semi-private)

State-subsidised private schools, often Catholic. €100–€350/month plus extras. Generally smaller classes and more discipline than public schools.

International schools on the Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca has 20+ international schools.

  • British: Lady Elizabeth School, Sierra Bernia, The English School (Elche)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB): Costa Blanca International College
  • American curriculum: ELIS Alicante
  • Dutch: Het Nederlandse School
  • German: Deutsche Schule Alicante

Fees and admissions

International school fees range €5,000–€14,000 per year plus enrolment. Apply 6–12 months before the September start. Most popular schools have waiting lists.
