Opening a Bank Account in Spain

Step-by-step guide to opening a Spanish bank account as an expat. Resident vs non-resident accounts, required documents, fees, online banks and our recommended options.

A Spanish bank account makes daily life much easier — it's needed for utilities, your NIE/residency, paying tax, signing a rental contract and most direct debits. Here's how to open one in 2026, whether you're already resident or not.

Resident vs non-resident accounts

Non-resident accounts have higher fees but can be opened with just a passport. Resident accounts are cheaper but require a green NIE certificate or TIE.

Documents you'll need

Bring everything in original form plus a copy.

  • Passport
  • NIE certificate (resident accounts)
  • Proof of address (utility bill or padrón)
  • Proof of income or employment
  • Certificate of non-residency (banks can request this on your behalf)

Traditional banks

Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank and Sabadell have English-speaking branches in expat areas. Monthly fees range €0–€15 depending on the account and balance.

Online banks

N26, Revolut, Wise and Openbank are popular with expats — low fees, English app, instant IBAN. Some Spanish admin still asks for a traditional Spanish IBAN though.
