NIE Number — How to Get One in Spain
The single most important number in your Spanish life. You'll need it for housing, banking, taxes, contracts and almost every official process.
If you're moving to Spain — or even just buying property as a non-resident — getting an NIE is step one. The good news: it's cheap and simple. The bad news: getting an appointment can be painful in popular areas.
What you'll need
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| Form EX-15 | Foreigners' Office application form (download from interior ministry site) |
| Form 790 code 012 | Tax form, ~€9.84, paid at any Spanish bank before appointment |
| Passport | Original + photocopy of every page with stamps |
| Proof of reason | Property purchase contract, job offer, business reason, etc. |
| Passport photos | Two recent (some offices skip this) |
How to apply — step by step
- 1
Decide where
From abroad: Spanish consulate. From Spain: any National Police station with a foreigners' unit.
- 2
Book cita previa
Most offices require an online appointment. Slots open early morning — try multiple offices in your region.
- 3
Fill in EX-15
Choose 'NIE' as the type of request and explain your reason (e.g. property purchase, work, banking).
- 4
Pay tax 790-012
Print form, pay at any Spanish bank counter, keep the stamped receipt.
- 5
Attend appointment
Bring originals and copies. Many offices grant the NIE on the spot — others mail it in 1–2 weeks.
Tips that save weeks
- • If no appointments are visible, refresh at 8:00 AM Monday — that's when new slots usually open.
- • Try smaller police stations outside the main coastal towns — much shorter queues.
- • Use a gestor if you're not in Spain yet — they can get appointments and even apply by power of attorney.
- • Always make 2 photocopies of everything. Spanish offices love a stamped copy.
