Technology Investment on the Costa Blanca

Beyond the consumer-facing tourism economy, Alicante and Valencia are building a credible B2B technology base: cybersecurity, AI applied to real estate and tourism, fintech for SMEs and digital agencies serving northern-European clients. Operating cost advantage plus the Beckham / DNV tax stack make it one of Europe's most cost-efficient B2B tech bases.

Where the cluster is concentrated

Distrito Digital in Alicante (200+ tech companies, 4,500+ workers) is the visible centre. Hidden alongside it: ~150 boutique SaaS and agency businesses operated remotely by foreign founders across Jávea, Moraira, Altea and Albir. Valencia (1 hour north) adds the EU's largest single-tenant building (EUIPO), Lanzadera and 400+ scale-ups.

The combined corridor is now Spain's #3 tech labour pool after Madrid and Barcelona, growing 9–12% per year, with senior engineer salaries 30–45% below those metros.

Talent landscape

Senior full-stack engineer: €45–€65k. Senior data engineer / ML engineer: €55–€80k. Senior DevOps: €50–€72k. Compare to €95–€140k for equivalent profiles in Amsterdam or London. Tax-efficient stock-option grants (up to €50k/year tax-deferred under the Startup Law) make total-comp packages competitive.

University of Alicante and Politécnica de Valencia produce ~3,800 STEM graduates/year combined; retention has materially improved since 2022 as the local ecosystem matured.

Tax stack for tech founders

  • Innovative-startup status (ENISA-certified) → 15% corporate tax for first 4 profit years.
  • Beckham Law (inbound founders/execs) → 24% flat IRPF up to €600k for 6 years.
  • R&D tax credit → 25–42% of qualifying spend, refundable.
  • Stock options → €50k/year tax-deferred under Startup Law.
  • Carried interest → effective ~26% (vs 47% standard) for fund managers.
  • OSS / IOSS → single Spanish registration covers all EU B2C VAT.
