What 'assisted living' actually means in Spain
Spain's residential care sector is regulated by the Generalitat Valenciana and divided into three main tiers: residencia de válidos (independent seniors), residencia asistida or mixta (assisted), and unidad de psicogeriatría (dementia/high-dependency). Most modern Costa Blanca residences are mixta — they accept both independent and dependent residents and shift the level of care as needs change.
Assisted residences provide a private or shared room, all meals, laundry, daily cleaning, 24/7 nursing supervision, medication management, help with washing and dressing, organised activities and access to a doctor at least weekly. Physiotherapy, podiatry and hairdressing are usually billed extra.

Public vs private — and the dependency grant
Spain's Ley de Dependencia (2006) grades dependency on three levels (Grado I-III). Once recognised, residents get a Prestación Económica Vinculada al Servicio (PEVS) of €300–€715/month towards a private residence, or a fully subsidised place in a public/concertada home if available — waiting lists in Alicante province run 12-24 months.
Non-Spaniards qualify after 5 years of legal residency in Spain (2 of them immediately before applying). The application is made at the Conselleria de Igualdad — you'll need TIE, padrón, medical reports and a social-services interview at home.

How to choose — the 10-point checklist
- ✦Ratio of carers to residents during the night shift (ask specifically) — anything worse than 1:15 is a red flag.
- ✦Resident doctor on site vs visiting doctor (visiting = weekly only).
- ✦Languages spoken by carers — critical for British, Nordic, Dutch and German residents.
- ✦Distance from your family / current home (visits matter more than facilities).
- ✦Whether the home is concertada (can convert to subsidised place later).
- ✦Food — ask to eat lunch there before signing. Menus rotate on a 4-week cycle.
- ✦Activity programme — daily, varied and optional, not compulsory bingo.
- ✦Outside space — gardens, terraces, secure walking paths for dementia residents.
- ✦Visitor policy — good homes allow visits 10:00-20:00 every day, no appointments.
- ✦Recent inspection report (memoria) — request it. All licensed residences must produce one.
Contract red flags
Look out for: 3-month deposit (legal max is 2 months), price-rise clauses tied to anything other than CPI, fees that escalate by dependency grade with no cap, no refund of unused days if the resident dies or is hospitalised, and a 'right to terminate' that gives the residence — not the family — control. Have a Spanish lawyer or your gestor review any contract over €2,500/month.
