Dental & Vision Care in Spain for Retirees

SNS barely covers dentistry and routine vision — so almost everything is private. The good news: prices are 40–60% below UK, Irish and US levels, and the Costa Blanca is full of multilingual clinics.

What SNS covers (very little)

  • Emergency extractions for acute pain
  • Oral cancer screening and surgery
  • Children under 14 — annual check-up and basic work
  • Pregnant women — cleaning and basic care
  • Cataract surgery, glaucoma, retinal disease (vision)

Routine dental is private

Cleanings, fillings, crowns, root canals, implants, dentures, orthodontics, whitening — all private. Same for routine eye exams, glasses, contact lenses and elective laser surgery.

Finding a good clinic

Dentistry on the Costa Blanca is competitive — every town has at least one English-speaking practice. Reliable chains include Dentix (in administration as of 2024 — check status), Vitaldent, Sanitas Dental and Caser Dental. Independent clinics in Albir, Jávea and Dénia consistently get the best reviews from international retirees; ask in local Facebook groups for current recommendations. For opticians the big networks (Multiópticas, General Óptica, Alain Afflelou) are reliable, with Specsavers branches in Jávea and Calpe specifically targeting UK retirees.

Insurance add-ons vs paying as you go

Sanitas Dental Premium and Adeslas Dental run €10–€18/month and cover cleanings, X-rays and discounts of 30–50% on bigger work. Worth it if you have 2+ dental appointments a year or anticipate implants. If you only go once a year for a clean, self-pay is cheaper.
